Help - Advanced search

In an advanced search you can search within the metadata and/or within the full text. All fields are combined with the operator AND by default.

Collection selection

With this selection box you can define whether the advanced search is to be carried out in all collections or just in a specific one. The search options below will be adjusted according to your chosen collection(s). After you have selected a collection, another multi-selection box will appear. Here you can chose individual journals from the collection which you want to include in your search.

Metadata

With the selection boxes on the left you can determine for each line which indications referring to an article (so called metadata) are to be searched for the search term(s) you enter in the field on the right.
Via the selection boxes in the middle you define the relation of the words you enter in the box on the right:
  • with all words: Only hits containing all the search terms will be displayed. Word order is ignored.
  • with any of the words: Hits containing at least one of the search terms will be displayed.
  • without: Only hits containing none of the search terms will be displayed.
  • with exact phrase: Only hits containing all the search terms in the given order will be displayed.
In the field on the right of each line you may enter single words or entire phrases. Word order is only considered if the option “with exact phrase” is preselected.
Upper and lower case are not distinguished:
The term Mathematik will be found if either MATHEMATIK oder mathematik is entered.
Wildcards: "*" represents an arbitrary chain of characters and "?" stands for one single character.
Entering Algebra* will also find Algebraisch ; entering formul? Will find formula as well as formule.
You may search for a phrase (words in specific order) by enclosing it in quotation marks.

Full text

Here you can enter terms for searches within the full text of journal articles. The same options as for metadata searches are available.

Other filters

Right truncated means that hits will be displayed which contain words longer than the search term entered. This is equal to entering a term with wildcard "*": geometri* finds Geometrie, geometrisch , geometric etc.
Exact search only finds exact matches of your search term.

Period: Years must be entered with four digits. If both fields are used, the search is limited to the period from the beginning of the first year to the end of the second year entered. If only one field is used, the search is limited to the year entered. If both fields are left blank, all years will be included in the search.
The display of the hit list can be sorted by year or by article author.

Category selection

In some collections searches can be filtered by choice of a category such as Article, Advertising, Obituary etc.
